REDE Scoring Methodology

A practical guide to scoring tasks, interpreting automation exposure bands, calibrating self-assessments, and running a colleague review.

REDE (say 'ready') stands for Role Evaluation for Durability and Edge: a task-by-task look at your role that shows what is durable and where your edge is.

Four scoring dimensions

Score each task from 1 to 5 on every dimension. Lower totals indicate stronger human judgment and decision ownership.

V1

Codification

If the person doing this task left today, how much of the method could the next person execute from documented instructions?

Measures how completely the method can be expressed through documentation, rules, or formulas.

Score 1
1 — Tacit and dependent on experience or relationships
Score 5
5 — Fully documented and executable from explicit instructions

V2

Context

How much of this task could someone from another organization do well, with no knowledge of your people, politics or history?

Measures how much success depends on local relationships, history, politics, and unwritten organizational knowledge.

Score 1
1 — Hyper-local and relationship dependent
Score 5
5 — Universal and portable across organizations

V3

Accountability

If this task is done badly, how easily could the mistake be caught and fixed?

Measures the severity, reversibility, and personal accountability attached to a realistic failure.

Score 1
1 — Catastrophic, irreversible, and personally accountable
Score 5
5 — Low-cost, regenerable, and easily corrected

V4

Standardization

How fixed is the format of the deliverable — is it negotiated fresh with stakeholders each time, or produced to a standing specification?

Measures whether the final deliverable is negotiated and bespoke or produced to a stable specification.

Score 1
1 — Bespoke and shaped through stakeholder consensus
Score 5
5 — Produced from a fixed template or specification

Automation Exposure score bands

Score 4–8

Durable Capability

High personal judgment and critical accountability make this work more durable as automation changes.

Score 9–14

Augmentable Multiplier

Strategic synthesis & decision analysis: prime for human + AI collaboration.

Score 15–20

Vulnerable Task

Procedural templates & routine execution: target for delegation or redesign.

Automation Exposure Score = V1 + V2 + V3 + V4

Each task is classified from its Automation Exposure score using the fixed score bands above.
